Some of the oldest spiritually driven tattoos of Japan appear nearly 10,000 years before christ. Those early tattoos indicated a positive status in society whereas modern tattoos have taken on negative feelings as they were once given to criminals as punishment. The style resembles flat woodblock prints featuring dragons, flowers, tigers & spiritual imagery. Many of the early modern tattoo artists in Japan were woodblock artists.
