This traditional tattoo style originating in the early 1900’s and pioneered by Sailor Jerry features bold (often cartoon-like) outlines and vivid colors. The subject matter contained naval symbolism, pin ups and various counter culture iconography from the turn of the century. Although Sailor Jerry is best well known for his tattoo art, he is silently attributed with innovating modern tattoo machines, sterilization and professional western technique.
